Oral Cancer Screening

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, 115 people will be diagnosed with some type of mouth cancer in the U.S. every day and one person dies from oral cancer every hour.

Because of these alarming statistics, Dr. Cettie and Dr. Manzo believe strongly in early detection and education, and every patient at Applewood Dental in Wheat Ridge receives a complimentary oral cancer screen with his or her dental exam. During these exams, we evaluate the gums, tongue, tissues, palate and throat for any abnormalities. Examining the tissues by hand allows us to feel for any bumps or lumps that may need further evaluation. In some cases, an additional referral to a periodontist (gum specialist) or oral surgeon may be required for biopsy and or treatment. In other cases, education and preventative measures will be discussed, including help with smoking cessation, and risk factor analysis.

At-home evaluations are another important component to our oral cancer screenings. If you notice a change in your mouth including: sores that don’t go away with in one week, growths, discolorations (including red or white), numbness, erosions (craters) or difficulty swallowing, please schedule a tissue check. This is a fast, painless, no-charge appointment at Applewood Dental in Wheat Ridge.
